ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational AI assistant, and its built-in search (ChatGPT Search) makes it a genuine alternative to Google for answering questions. When you search, it retrieves from the live web via RAG, synthesises an answer, and cites sources inline. People increasingly ask it the questions they used to type into Google - which makes its retrieval preferences directly relevant to your organic visibility.

Why It Matters

ChatGPT Search is the clearest example of how search behaviour is splitting. For informational queries, a meaningful share of people now ask ChatGPT instead of Google, and they get an answer - not a list to click. Your content either gets retrieved and cited in those answers, or it doesn't exist in that conversation.

It also matters as a discovery surface. Being cited by ChatGPT for your industry's questions positions you as the authority in front of people who weren't looking for an agency - they were looking for an answer, and you were the source. That's a brand-impression channel that didn't exist three years ago.

In Practice

Keep your content retrievable and quotable - crawlable, structured, with direct answers ChatGPT can cite. Ask ChatGPT your own industry's questions and audit who it names. When you're not cited, look at who is and why: their depth, structure and authority. When you are, you're winning retrieval - reinforce it with more of the content that earned the citation.

Don't try to game it. ChatGPT Search favours the same qualities as Google - clarity, authority, genuine usefulness. The businesses it cites are the ones with the best answers, which is the same bar good SEO has always set.

Common Mistakes

Assuming ChatGPT doesn't matter because it sends little referral traffic, or blocking its crawler (GPTBot) out of vague concern. The value is in the answers it gives - be the source it names.
