AI Citation

An AI citation is when an answer engine names your content as the source behind its answer - a link or reference in a Perplexity response, a ChatGPT search result, or a Google AI Overview source. It's the AI-era equivalent of a featured snippet: visibility at the exact moment the searcher's question gets answered, credited to you by name.

Why It Matters

Citations carry three kinds of value. Referral traffic, when the searcher clicks through to verify. Brand visibility, when the answer names you to someone who never would have found you. And trust - being cited by an AI system for a competitive query positions you as the authority by default.

Citations also compound. The more the engines cite you, the more you look like the source, and the more they retrieve you. First-mover advantage in AI search is real: once an answer engine has learned you're the authority on a topic, displacing you means out-answering you, not just out-ranking you.

In Practice

Create content that reads like it should be cited: direct answers, named data, expert authors, sources of your own. Keep it retrievable - crawlable pages, working schema, no paywalls or JS-gated answers. Monitor your citations the way you'd monitor rankings: ask the engines your industry's questions and see who they name.

When you spot a competitor being cited, audit why: their answer structure, their depth, their authority signals. The citation race is won by the most quotable content, and quotable is a skill you can deliberately improve.

Common Mistakes

Chasing citations with content engineered purely for AI - quote-bait with nothing behind it. The engines retrieve what's genuinely authoritative. Or ignoring citations as 'not real traffic' while competitors quietly become the default answer.
