Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's event-based analytics platform, the successor to Universal Analytics. It tracks every meaningful user action as an event - page views, scrolls, conversions, signups - across sites and apps, and ties it to a single user journey. For SEO it's the reporting layer: the place where rankings and traffic become revenue, and where the difference between winning the traffic game and winning the business game shows up.
Why It Matters
SEO without analytics is guesswork. GA4 is where you see whether organic traffic converts, which pages drive the revenue, and where visitors drop off. The old error - celebrating rankings and traffic while revenue stays flat - is exactly what good analytics catches. Every engagement should be able to answer: did the SEO move the number that matters?
The event-based model also matches how modern sites work. View transitions, SPA navigation, micro-interactions - GA4 captures behaviour Universal Analytics couldn't. Configured properly, it's the difference between knowing traffic went up and knowing why that mattered.
In Practice
Set up conversions for the actions that mean money - form submissions, demo requests, purchases - and attribute them to organic. Filter the noise: segments for organic, for landing pages, for new vs returning. The dashboard should answer three questions: what did organic bring, what did it convert, and what's it worth.
Track view-transition and SPA navigation properly - single-page sites need custom page-view events or every visit looks like one page. And audit it regularly: misconfigured analytics (goals counting as page views, double-fired events) has quietly invalidated more SEO reporting than any algorithm change.
Common Mistakes
Measuring traffic instead of outcomes, or trusting a GA4 setup nobody configured properly. If conversions aren't set up, the data lies about what the SEO is worth - and nobody notices until the budget conversation.
